COMMON SKINCARE MISTAKES

PULLING YOUR SKIN

A recent Fresha survey of TikTok skincare influencers identified that the most common issue across skincare routines was pulling on the skin too harshly when applying products.
It’s important to be gentle when applying products: “When rubbing in moisturiser, serums, or sun cream, it’s important to do so in circular upwards motions or to tap it in lightly, as pulling on the skin can make it harder for products to absorb and can cause irritation or dryness.
I would also add that scrubbing your face too harshly, especially those of us who have oily or spot-prone skin, is a common error. It’s unnecessary and damaging. Just choose a good quality cleanser for your skin type, and there is no need.

SKIPPING ESSENTIAL STEPS

The second-most prevalent skincare mistake was skipping essential steps or not using products in the correct order. The product most of these creators skipped was toner, while almost as many missed cleanser – why??!
Double cleansing and use of a toner means you thoroughly remove debris, dirt, oil and pollutants from your skin. Applying them in the right order is also essential to get the best out of them. An example of this is applying sunscreen before moisturiser rather than after which will dilute the impact of your SPF.

FORGETTING THE NECK AND CHEST

Number three on the list of most common skincare mistakes is not applying products to the chest or neck alongside the face.
Applying actives and moisturising products to your neck and chest is important to minimise the signs of premature aging, as these delicate areas are especially prone to dehydration and damage from sun exposure.

NO DAILY SUNSCREEN

In my opinion, the most essential elements of your skincare routine are a good cleanser and sunscreen. Approximately 90 percent of skin ageing is due to sun exposure and environmental pollutants, so these 2 steps can’t be skipped, and sunscreen is essential all year round. NEVER go without!

DIPPING THOSE FINGERS IN!

Another common mistake highlighted was putting unclean fingers into product jars. Use a spatula or a cotton bud to avoid contaminating your products and always make sure you wash your hands.

WATER TEMPERATURE

Finally, it was observed that many wash their face using either too hot or too cold water. Keep it tepid or luke-warm to avoid irritation and damage, especially if you have sensitive or rosacea prone skin.
